Het Nederlands kent ook zo’n liedje: Katrijntje Boelijntje
Boelijn = een touw waarmee de lijzijde van een zeil strak naar voren
in de wind getrokken kan worden
Er wordt wel beweerd dat Haul on the Bowline stamt uit de tijd van Henry VIII. Daar is geen bewijs voor maar de shanty kan wel ouder zijn dan de meeste want al heel lang is de bowline een belangrijke lijn waaraan vaak gesjord moest worden.
Menig zeeman, als hij even de tijd had om adem te halen, vroeg zich af waarom er zoveel werk gemaakt moest worden in deze ‘short-drag’-[korte haal] shanty, een lied dat een favoriet bleef tot de laatste dagen van de grote zeilvaart.
Met de bowline werd de schoot van het voorzeil aangehaald en het lied werd ook gebruikt bij andere karweitjes die een paar stevige halen nodig hadden.
Het trekken kwam op het woord “haul” aan het eind van elk couplet.
Haul on the Bowline was used as a hauling shanty long after the bowline has ceased to be an important rope aboard ship.
